Patients Without Family Physician – Patient Connect NB is a provincial registry set up to help match those without a physician with a primary health care provider. The registry can be accessed through the Department of Health’s website at www.gnb.ca/patientconnectnb or by calling Tele-Care at 811.

The process of exploring needs for a Parish Nurse within the parish of St. Anthony’s was initiated 4.5 years ago. During that time the parish had information sessions with speakers from around the province who had been involved with this form of ministry for many years. The Parish Pastoral Council designated April 2008 as Parish Nursing Month. A needs assessment was distributed to each member of the congregation. Because of such a positive response, a part-time Parish Nurse was hired for 10 hours per week commencing in December 2008.

The parish nursing ministry is congregation driven. As well as the programs and services offered, the parish nurse provides support in a completely confidential way one-on-one for members of the congregation and/or for families.

The nurse functions as a integrator of faith and health, a personal counselor, a health educator, an advocate, a referral source. Based on these findings, the role of the Parish Nurse fits well within the goals stated in the Provincial Health Plan. Presently there are 13 Parish Nurses in New Brunswick. We are members of the Canadian Parish Nursing Ministry.

In 2009 through a grant from New Horizons for Seniors programs, we implemented the program “Baby Boomers’ Happy, healthy, in mind, body and spirit.” The program offered yoga, nurtition and had an educational component that focused on faith, spirituality, health, leadership and healing.

In 2010 we implemented the program “Celebration of the Soul and Beyond – through the power of Pottery, Photography and Painting.” 45 people participated in the program and the evaluation and feedback were excellent!

Nursing remains one of the most trusted professions. The presence of the nurse keeps a finger on the pulse of the congregation. The nurse can promote a healthy lifestyle through education by networking with existing resources with other organizations and the provincial Department of Health.
